5 best Netflix shows to watch (and 2 to skip) in September 2023
As summer finally starts to wind down and the temperatures (hopefully) begin to get cooler, the fall season brings a number of highly anticipated Netflix shows to our watch lists. New seasons of some of the biggest hits on the streamer will be enough to keep us cool indoors for at least 10 episodes.
After a longer wait than usual, Virgin River season 5 premieres in September to answer our burning questions from the season 4 finale. Meanwhile, two final seasons of fan-favorite show bookend the month. Prepare to say goodbye to both Disenchantment and Sex Education.
Beyond these three shows, there are many more titles coming throughout September, including a couple foreign titles, an anime, and an intriguing limited series. But are they all worth watching? As we do each month, we’re telling you what to watch and skip in September.
Best Netflix shows September 2023
Here are the five best Netflix shows to watch in September 2023, along with two shows that might not be for everyone and can be skipped for another time, beginning below with Virgin River.

Virgin River season 5
Watch! Even though fans would have preferred the new season of Virgin River premiere in the summertime as expected, the first part of season 5 arrives on Sept. 7. Picking up in the aftermath of season 4, the fifth season finds Mel and Jack engaged, expecting their first child, and still dealing with the fallout from Charmaine. While the season teases a devastating fire in the town, two additional holiday-themed episodes will follow in November.
Sex Education season 4
Watch! After four seasons and lots of laughs, the Netflix original series Sex Education is coming to an end. The fourth season, which premieres on Sept. 21, will be the final hurrah for Otis and his friends. A lot of changes are afoot in the fourth and final season, and long-time fans will not want to miss a single moment of the last batch of episodes. See how the show comes to an end when season 4 drops this fall.
Burning Body
Skip! Between the 365 Days movies, Through Your Window, and the recent hit series Fake Profile, some of the steamier titles on Netflix tend to be pretty popular. In September, the streamer launches another series that could burn its way into the top 10. Burning Body is a sexy mystery-thriller that premieres on Sept. 8. If you’re not typically interested in these kinds of shows, it’s totally fine to pass.

Disenchantment: Part 5. (L to R) Eric Andre as Porky, Abbi Jacobson as Bean, John DiMaggio as Zog, and Maurice LaMarche as Big Jo in Disenchantment: Part 5. Cr. NETFLIX © 2023
Disenchantment part 5
Watch! It’s been almost two years since the last batch of new Disenchantment episodes premiered in February 2022. After that release, there had been little word about the show’s fate, but thankfully for its fans, Netflix announced the fifth and final part of the series (otherwise known as the third season). Before the last 10 episodes debut on Sept. 1, make sure to watch all 40 of the previous episodes to prepare for the end.
Top Boy season 3
Watch! The British crime drama series Top Boy returns on Sept. 7 with its final batch of episodes. As Netflix teases in the synopsis, the final season will determine who become the Top Boy of Summerhouse. If you have been waiting since March 2022 for new episodes, your wait will finally be over when every episode of season 3 arrives to answer all of those lingering questions.
Dear Child
Skip! The German limited series Dear Child brings another dark and suspenseful series to our watch lists on Sept. 7. In the series, a woman escapes from captivity, which helps investigators connect the dots of an unsolved mystery from over a decade prior. Expect to see this one in the top 10, but if dark mysteries aren’t your thing, let the others have fun watching this one.
Castlevania: Nocturne
Watch! It’s unlikely that any anime fans will be passing on the opportunity to watch every single second of Castlevania: Nocturne when the new season premieres on Sept. 28. Nocturne contains eight all-new episodes, and it’s going to be an adventure all fans of Castlevania will love. Make sure not to pass on the new season at the end of September.
